Aside from Star Wars the most influential film from my childhood was probably Earth vs. The Flying Saucers (1956). Midway through Travis Pastrana’s attempt at breaking a Guinness Book of World Records record for the most consecutive donuts, I was suddenly swept up by a wave of late night nostalgia as the squealing tires of death sounded almost exactly like that of aliens attempting to communicate with the people of Earth. Part of me now says to screw buying the Nitro Circus Season 1 DVD and splurge on the deluxe Earth vs. The Flying Saucers two-disc special edition, but I’m guessing that would go against the company grain. Regardless, with Christmas coming up fast perhaps you can get both. Better yet, add the following other classic features to your wish list to consume the same Cold War-rich fodder that nourished creative nerd minds for decades to come: Invaders From Mars (1953), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), This Island Earth (1955), Forbidden Planet (1956), The Thing (1951), and last but not least Invasion of the Saucer Men (1957). Don’t sleep on that last one, because the extra-awesome looking aliens don’t just terrorize humans—they inject them with alcohol! Woohoo!
