There are many hybrid moments when it comes to combining things uniquely male and female. One of the more popular is the nickname for people of the transgender persuasion: a “shman,” in the singular sense. Another is the increasingly more common “moobs” of American men (let’s just say fast food equals fast boobs and leave it at that). One you don’t see too often, though, is a camel toe on a man. It’s something more akin to ratings-friendly moments with the female cast of Baywatch, not so much the stalwart package of a man. So when Mr. Merlin made an appearance at a party with one, well, cause quite a stir it did. For one, what do you call it? A camel toe just sounds … wrong (although “ungulate” does have a rather curious tone). Part of me wants to label it a “Derek Smalls,” but if only because of the namesake’s legendary importance to mockumentary cinema and awkward protuberances in men’s pants. So let’s not stray too far from the barn and simply use the standardized “M” contraction, making it a “mammal toe.” But I’m open to any other suggestions, of course.
