johnny knoxville’s top 10 songs used on jackass

1. “The Knife Song,” by Milk

One time a girl asked me, “Where can I get copy of Tremaine’s song?” I had no clue what she was talking about. She told me Jeff Tremaine was in a band called Milk with Dirt magazine alumnus Andy Jenkins and Mark Lewman, and the song was “awesome.” I remember listening to the song and not being able to tell that it was Jeff singing. I have trouble determining that’s my Jeff on vocals even now. His singing voice is so different from his shouting/spitting one. Anyway, that girl was right about one thing: the song is awesome.

2. “The Party Boy Theme,” by Dave Roen

This is kinda like hearing the Jaws theme. Once I hear that menacing John Williams composition I know someone is going to get devoured by a shark, and when I hear the Party Boy theme, I know somebody is about to get cummed on. And I just hope that somebody ain’t me.

3. “Made in Japan,” by Buck Owens

I love Buck Owens and I rove Japan. I played this song constantly while we were filming in Tokyo and I play it every time I have been lucky enough to go back. Great, great song and even greater country.

4. “If You’re Gonna Be Dumb,” by Roger Alan Wade

Amongst the cast and crew this song supplanted “Corona” as kinda the unofficial theme song of jackass. It captures the whole spirit of what we do, and that’s kinda funny cuz my cousin Roger Alan Wade was writing it about himself.

5. “Hybrid Moments,” by The Misfits

If you want to see a van full of homos start shouting and singing along in their seats, crank this bitch real loud. On the way to the bars this song was always blasting.

6. “Teenage Kicks,” by The Undertones

One of my all-time favorite songs. I think we used it in a bit on the TV show, but I can’t even remember the name of it now … it’s the one where we are all jumping off the 10-meter board in an indoor swimming pool in Florida. Sometimes a song can elevate a mediocre bit into a good one, and that’s what happened here.

7. “Sometimes I Don’t Know,” by Roger Alan Wade

Before filming a stunt that could possibly go really wrong in jackass number two, I would sit in my car alone and listen to my cousin sing this song. It made me feel pissed, which made me feel safe, like my anger was a shield. But then after wrapping the movie, I learned that anger is a manifestation of fear. Guess I wasn’t so safe after all. Ha ha ha…

8. “Karazy,” by Chris Pontius

It is shocking to me how catchy the songs are that Chris Pontius writes and records. I am not surprised HE can do it, I am surprised ANYBODY can write lyrics so smart and hilarious. And his riffs are as infectious as that 10-inch war hammer dangling between his leg. It’s as if Glenn Danzig, The Frogs, and Django Reinhardt mated with a Cuisinart and spit out his music. It’s inspired.

9. “Backass,” by Karen O

Karen O is one of the most talented people I have ever met in my life. Her singing, songwriting, performing, and sense of style are an insane explosion of confluence that only comes around once in a good long time. Genius is not too strong a word to use in relation to her. But with that said, I can’t  really say much about her judge of talent. She was sweet enough to write and record (along with Peaches) this f’ing great song for us on jackass number two, but was under the huge misconception that I could sing. I tried to get out of it, but she insisted I perform on this record. She kept on telling me there is a great singing voice inside me and I tried to protest. I finally gave in and recorded my vocal with her, but after the session I asked her to please turn me way down or Pro Tools the shit out me. She was so warm and encouraging about it, even afterward, and although she still won’t admit I am tone deaf, I do get a little smirk out of her nowadays when I bring it up.

10. “Treatment Bound,” by The Replacements*

We wanted the last song in the credits of jackass number two to be a song that completely captured the spirit of the film. “Treatment Bound” was the song we wished for but knew we couldn’t get. We were told that Paul Westerberg just doesn’t do that. Well, he did do it, but he prolly (most definitely) wouldn’t have unless it wasn’t for former Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson. I had known Tommy for a number of years through my friend Loomis Fall, and we all usually drank together at this former shithole in Hollywood. At my bended-knee pleading, Tommy went to Paul Westerberg with our request and he approved it. I will always be indebted to Tommy for that.

* On a side note, I fucking love The Replacements, and prolly the biggest compliment I ever received was from Tommy himself. He really likes jackass, and one time in a bar he said, “If my brother Bob were still alive he would have loved it, too.” Man, that made me happy then and it makes me happy now.
