Now I’m not implying Wolfie is our April fool or anything, but he does bring to a mind a very good prank that spun wildly out of control on the very last episode of the jackass TV show in 2001. It was one of those instances when you catch yourself second guessing what you’re about to do (which is usually a good indication that you should probably not do what you’re about to do), but we erred on the dumb side of the coin and went ahead and did it anyway.
So it came to pass that Greg Wolf’s honest to god cell phone number was flashed across the bottom of the screen while he was shown running around the production offices in an ill-fitting metallic gold lamé bathing suit. He had no idea we’d done this up until the episode aired, at which point his cell started blowing up in EST. Luckily, Dimitry had managed to slyly swipe his phone earlier that day and he only handed it back to Greg—as it was ringing off the proverbial hook—right there in the bar where we’d all gathered to watch the last show debut in PST.
“Wolfie!” Dimitry excitedly blurted while holding out the phone for him, “It’s for you!”
Poor Greg looked like a fish out of water as he tried to wrap his head around the fact his private number had just been broadcast on national TV. I almost felt bad for him, but I had a vodka cranberry in hand and I was far more attuned to the barroom presence of Heather Graham whom I’d once developed a wayward crush on during her Twin Peaks run.
The next day at lunch, we convinced Wolfie that Jeff Tremaine was ultimately to blame and that he should record a new outgoing message on his phone stating that the “jackass hotline” had been changed to a new number—Tremaine’s. Wolf complied, to our deviant delight, and Jeff was completely taken by surprise when his phone started lighting up with calls—a situation compounded by the mad fact he was expecting an important call from the executive branch of MTV. He was quick to surmise what happened, though, and he changed his outgoing message to forward callers to Dimitry, whom he’d rightly suspected to be the turncoat in the operation.
Unfortunately for Jeff, Dimitry proved to be far more technologically superior. He immediately programmed his phone to automatically bounce the calls right back to Tremaine’s number which only left him all the more baffled and pissed. Three new cell phone numbers later a truce was called and we haven’t given out anyone’s number since—AIM addresses excluded, of course.
