news correction – popcorn sutton’s ford fairlane

Yesterday we published a photo of the car Popcorn Sutton was reported to have committed suicide in on Monday afternoon. At the time I wrote the news of Popcorn’s passing, my source in Tennessee had told me we had the right vehicle. Well, according to what Popcorn’s widow Pam Sutton told the Asheville Times we had the wrong car. Here is what she said:

“Pam Sutton said she went into town to run errands and couldn’t find her husband at their house when she returned. She found him at the rear of their property inside his beloved old Ford Fairlane, which was running, she said. ‘He called it his three-jug car because he gave three jugs of liquor for it,’ she said. ‘He had painted it John Deere green and it had yellow wheels. He had drove it to California and back.’”

When I read the Asheville Times, I called my longtime friend Storm Taylor in Tennessee and asked him if he had any pictures of the “three jugs car.” Storm is the reason I had the honor of meeting ol’ Popcorn in the first place, and he emailed back with the photo below of me and Popcorn with the green Ford Fairlane. I remember Popcorn telling me how much he loved that car and about his trip to California in it. I didn’t even think the car still ran. I was wrong.
