jackass not on dvd – mark gonzales’s skate wheel

warning
These webclips feature stunts performed either by professionals or under the supervision of professionals. MTV and the producers must insist that no one attempt any activity performed on the site.

There are legends in skateboarding and then there is Mark Gonzales. To attempt to describe him would do no justice, but for the sake of those who may be entirely in the dark as to who he is and what he has done since first stepping on a skateboard in the early ’80s, let’s just say he is to skateboarding what Willy Wonka is to candy production facilities. But the “skate wheel,” now that’s something I can describe.

To the best of my knowledge the first “skate wheel” was assembled by Mark Gonzales in 1991 just prior to his leaving Blind Skateboards. Along with friend and fellow pro skater Ron Chatman, Mark took a box of his Blind models and bolted them together to form a gigantic wheel. Nothing much happened with it then, aside from a photo or two, but in 2001 Mike Ballard proposed that we build another to let the Gonz have another go on. Girl Skateboards donated the boards, Ballard handled construction, Mark supplied the innovative flair, while Bam Margera and Wee Man added the flatulent air of jackass. Speaking of Bam, when it comes to sustaining shinners, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen one as painfully funny as his dual-cylinder skate wheel chop here.

The music is by Crooked X, incidentally, the track being “Gone.”
