For the more trivial-minded amongst you, here’s an esoteric selection of trivia surrounding Chris Pontius’s “Night Monkey” business in 2000:

1. The Night Monkey was one of those rare instances in which we broke stylistic code and used something other than Helvetica for the segment title. We even went one better and animated the damn thing!

2. The Night Monkey first appeared in the daytime during a “break out” at the Los Angeles zoo. The zoo, however, did not find this particularly funny because real gorillas get rather agitated by the sight of humans in gorilla costumes—apparently more so those of the ass-less variety.

3. The Night Monkey spawned a few transitional offshoots that were scattered about the episode. One of them involved a certain flagpole that Spike Jonze and Natas Kaupas once goofed around on for a sequence in Dirt magazine, Sassy’s adopted red-headed stepchild for boys that was put together by the Master Cluster of Andy Jenkins, Mark Lewman and Spike in the early ’90s.

4. The Night Monkey’s theme song, “Naked Ape,” is performed by none other than legendary pro skater Mike Smith—yes, the one and same namesake of the ever so stylish Smith grind (for those of you that can appreciate a good lip trick).

5. The Night Monkey produced a simian sequel in 2001 with surprise guest star Brad Pitt.

6. The price of gas in 2000 was $1.67 a gallon (regular).

7. The Night Monkey bought a pack of condoms and a bunch of bananas in the liquor store. For some reason, probably brand-related, like always, we were not allowed to show the condom packaging. Also, chances are when Josh watches this clip he’s going to want a banana, so hopefully Mike G. has stocked our kitchen accordingly.

8. The Night Monkey will not rip your face off and eat your balls, but these bastard chimps will!
