april cooks – the video

Back in the early days of jackass when the budget was nil and the company meals were crap, I much preferred our trips to West Chester, PA, over any other location. Even though April Margera came to dread these occasions when we’d descend on the town with nothing but filming on our minds—filming that often meant something bad was going to happen to her and Phil or the house in general—she still welcomed us into her then considerably smaller home with nothing but the best of motherly intentions. Translated, this meant home-cooked food and other goodies—a far more welcome alternative to our only other meals on the fly that consisted of greasy appetizers, Subway, and Wawa snack items (all of which amounted to mud butt and nothing more). And I still remember the one great catfish dinner she made that beat the hell out of anything on the menu over at Iron Hill Brewery on Gay Street.

Anyway, it came as no surprise when April called me up last year and asked if I had any photos from the alligator episode that went down on the floor of her kitchen for jackass the movie. She’d been talking about doing a cook book ever since the last seasons of jackass aired in 2001, so I was more than happy to contribute the photos to her publishing cause. The book itself is filled with all her random recipes, from the down, dirty, quick and easy to full-scale entrees, and covers all the standard bases—pastas, salads, veggies, meats, breads, seafood, and desserts—as well as a selection of mixed drinks inspired by all her surrounding louses and lushes (the very last concoction of which is actually a hangover remedy). There are also a few specialty “filming” recipes, like her famously haggard fake poo and functional fake blood. And even if you’re not a big food eater or prepper, April spiced up the pages with photos of family, friends, and celebrities from throughout the Margera’s non-famous, semi-famous and beyond famous years.

Happy Mother’s Day, April! You certainly deserve it.
