Sydney is often referred to as the San Francisco of Australia, meaning they’re both big gay bay cities. By coincidence, my big gay art show was going on the exact same weekend as Sydney’s big gay Mardi Gras celebration—its 30th anniversary, no less. I’m sure there were many big gay photo-worthy moments to be had throughout the big gay parade (for one, the famous “dykes on bikes” that lead the procession and proudly bared their oddly manly mammary glands for all to ponder), but after enduring the 24-hour takeover and flying straight to Australia the very next day my body was a bit beleaguered with zero drive for street journalism. So instead of hanging out on Oxford Street with 300,000 other big gay revelers, this big gay baby went straight to bed for a good night’s sleep. The next day, however, I happened upon this street in the Surry Hills district of Sydney and had to wonder how many times the city has replaced this sign due to big gay thieves. It even has a big gay Maritime logo to boot!
